Gap takes its name from the low pass it sits in between Mine Ridge and Gap Hill, right along US Route 30, the old Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike now known as the Lincoln Highway. The town's history stretches back to 1747, when Isaac Taylor built the first house here, and by 1792 the Rising Sun Tavern had opened along the pike, drawing travelers and eventually a small blacksmith trade that grew up around it.
