About Ephrata

Ephrata grew up around the Ephrata Cloister, a religious community founded in 1732 along the Cocalico Creek by German immigrant Conrad Beissel. The Cloister's Brothers and Sisters became known for their Fraktur calligraphy, self-composed hymns, and a working printing press, and the site later served as a field hospital for close to 250 soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

The restored Cloister still stands on West Main Street today as a National Historic Landmark. A few blocks away, the Ephrata Commercial Historic District preserves 36 buildings along Main and State Streets, among them the 1808 Eagle Hotel and the 1925 Ephrata National Bank. Every Friday, the Green Dragon Farmers Market, an Amish market and auction running continuously since 1932, fills 30 acres with local vendors and draws shoppers from across Lancaster County.
